Thank you Sport Relief!

This month its Sport Relief and we're turning yellow into red to celebrate!

We're incredibly grateful to receive funding from national charity Comic Relief, which allows us to support local mums with maternal mental health problems through our #MumsTogether project.

And this year the Sport Relief campaign is raising awareness of both maternity and mental health issues in our communities.

So what are the facts?

Well, we know that up to 20% of women will experience a mental health problem during pregnancy or the first year after birth (although these are only the women who actually get the help they need - it's likely that the figure is higher).

Nearly a quarter of maternal deaths between 6 weeks and 1 year after birth are due to mental health problems. And its a shocking reality that suicide remains one of the leading causes of death in the first year after birth.

Combating these debilitating illnesses, and preventing escalation is so important to protect the health and well-being of mums, their children and families, and peer-support plays a key role in this.

So what are we doing?

We're using the funding we've received to deliver free peer-led services to mums in north Cumbria, including weekly support groups and Mindfulness courses, with an alongside creche.

But we're also working hard to make sure that maternal mental health is better understood; that women and their families know what to watch out for, what help is available and how to access it.
