About us

We’re an award-winning not-for-profit organisation supporting women to be #HappyMums.

As part of our grant-funded #HappyMumbria project, we offer peer-led support groups for perinatal women to reduce the impact of maternal mental health problems such as anxiety, low mood, and antenatal/ postnatal depression in Carlisle and North Cumbria.

We were established in January 2015 by Katherine Dalgliesh who had experienced maternal mental health problems herself in 2012, with the aim of developing the support available to others facing similar challenges.

Our vision is a community where maternal mental health is embraced, with reduced impact on woman, baby and family, and where Happy Mums is a renowned leader in the provision of peer-led support.

We are guided in everything that we do by our values, which ensure that our organisation and services we provide will always be:

  • Peer-led: We have lived experience, either directly or through friends and family. We lead and learn from that experience;

  • Safe: We make it safe for women to share their experiences of maternal mental health in face-to-face group settings;

  • Empowering: We help women to accept and own their maternal mental health experiences;

  • Self-sustaining: We maintain our independence from statutory bodies and aspire to reduce our reliance on grant funding.

Our mission is to come together to provide hope and acceptance through shared experience of maternal mental health. We also aim to contribute to our community's well-being and local economy through social enterprise.

What we offer doesn’t replace professional advice and treatment, but complements it.

A large part our work is in raising awareness, so that more women seek the help they deserve, and the stigma around mental health issues is reduced.

All services offered as part of our #HappyMumbria project are free.

You can read more about the impact of our work in our Social Return on Investment Report
